· To encourage African-American students of exceptional
promise to prepare for college success and careers in business.
· To extend financial assistance for the academic
education of young African-Americans.
· To perpetuate the immortal influence of Mrs. Harden
by continuing her legacy of giving and collaborating with
those who are likely to make significant and ethical contributions
as entrepreneurs, business owners and world leaders.

Eligibility
Any African-American under the age of twenty-five years,
currently enrolled in, or who has been accepted into an
accredited four-year institution of higher learning as a
business major, intending to enter a career in business,
is encouraged to apply by April 30th.

Criteria for Selection
Special consideration is given to each of the following:
1) Evidence of intellectual ability, creativity and
academic achievement.
2) Evidence of commitment to undertake and sustain
college matriculation.
3) Evidence of the personal qualities and ethics
necessary to make constructive and valuable contributions
in business.

Selection Process
Selection is made by a committee comprised of educators
and entrepreneurs. Based on the outstanding merit evidenced
in the written application materials, a group of finalists
is invited to interview before the Selection Committee.
Award announcements are made in late June each year.

Terms of the Scholarship
The Ruth Spence Harden Memorial Scholarship is tenable only
for full-time undergraduate or graduate studies. Awards
may vary depending upon costs of study and individual need.
Given exemplary academic achievement, scholarship awards
are renewable for a period of four years or until the completion
of the degree program, whichever comes first. Scholarship
years need not be consecutive. Scholarship terms may also
be extended by securing financial supports from other sources.
